FreeDownloadStation is proud to present to you Pokkén Tournament DX for Mac OSX. Pokkén Tournament (Japanese: ポッ拳 Hepburn: Pokken) is a fighting video game developed by Bandai Namco Studios and published by The Pokémon Company. Pokkén Tournament for Mac combines gameplay elements from Bandai Namco’s Tekken series with characters from Nintendo’s Pokémon franchise. It was released for Japanese arcades in July 2015, and worldwide for the Wii U in March 2016. An enhanced port for the Nintendo Switch, titled Pokkén Tournament DX, was released in September 2017. Pokkén Tournament was specially released for PC, Macbook iMac and other devices by FreeDownloadStation in September 2017 and is free for download.

Pokkén Tournament DX for Mac is a fighting game in which two fighters battle against each other using various Pokémon, with gameplay shifting between “Field Phase” where the Pokémon move freely around the arena, and “Duel Phase” where they move relative to each other similar to the Tekken games. Unlike most arcade fighting games, which use a traditional joystick and buttons, the arcade version is played using console-style controllers, which are designed so that players who are not used to arcade sticks can get into the game more easily. The game focuses more on action, as opposed to the more technical gameplay of Tekken, allowing both hardcore and casual fans to enjoy it. As such, players can perform various techniques taken from the Pokémon series, such as special moves and Mega Evolutions (which can be built up from attacks using a “Synergy Gauge”). Players can also use Support Pokémon to give them special benefits such as buffs in attack or defense. First-print Wii U copies of the game were packaged with a Shadow Mewtwo Amiibo card, which immediately unlocked the character for use. The title also features online play, where players can compete in two types of online battle modes called friendly battles and ranked battles, including matches between players with registered friend codes and players who enter the same VS Code as each other.

Pokkén Tournament for Mac takes a lot of what we know from old fighting gaming favorites and sticks them into a blender, delivering a unique take on both Pokémon and on fighting games in general. Sometimes all those ingredients spill over a container that’s a little too full – there is a surprising amount to learn beyond the beginner’s level, and that may alienate some Pokémon fans without fighting game experience. Pokkén Tournament DX for Mac does do a good job, though, at alleviating this bloat of mechanics with single-player modes to help ease into the action. The same holds true for Pokkén Tournament DX for Mac, which is essentially the same game as the Wii U version, just with five more characters, a Daily Challenge mode, a new three-vs-three mode, ranked battles online, split-screen local play, and all of the convenience that comes with being on a console/handheld hybrid. It’s fortunate that Pokkén runs and looks great as ever whether the Mac OSX device is docked or in your hands. The caveat is that if you’re playing in Split Screen mode the frame rate takes a dramatic hit, even with the enormous border around the screens.

The five new Pokémon that Pokkén Tournament DX for Mac adds are Croagunk, Darkrai, Empoleon, Scizor, and Decidueye, and it’s great that all of these characters and the originally unlockable Mewtwo and Shadow Mewtwo are playable right at the start. My personal favorite is Scizor, who has the unique mechanic of creating swords that float behind him and can either be called upon to enhance basic combos or used as tricky projectiles. I’m a big fan of air combos too, and he’s got a great launcher that pops the enemy into the air for a follow-up air combo.

The Daily Challenge mode, on the other hand, feels tacked on without any real vision to it. Every day you get a new challenge that gives you a specific Pokémon, with a specific assist team, in a specific mode, with the promise of rewards in the form of skill points… which aren’t very useful. I’ve only gotten to experience a couple of these so far, but none have offered any interesting twists outside of having to win a fight using a character that I don’t normally use against easy AI bots that don’t require any sort of deep knowledge of a character to beat. Calling them “challenges” is a bit of a stretch. So grab the opportunity as quickly as you can because we are giving away Pokkén Tournament for free only for limited amount of time.
