IntelliJ is an IDE(Integrated Development Environment) for Java developers. IntelliJ is available in two editions, Ultimate and Community. We will be downloading IntelliJ Community Edition because it’s free, open-source.
Pre-requisite:
- Download and Install JAVA(JDK)
Download the latest version of PyCharm for Windows, macOS or Linux. PyCharm Coming in 2020.3 What's New Features Learning Center Buy Download. Here you can download the Java JDK 1.8. After installing it, it should appear as an option inside IntelliJ. UPDATE: Find File - Project structure menu and go to Project Settings - Project tab. If on Project SDK the Java version 1.8 SDK is not selected, change it and click OK.
Download and Install IntelliJ
Step 1: Navigate to https://www.jetbrains.com/idea/
Step 2: Click on download option
Step 3: In the next screen
- Select the platform ( I will be using Mac for my tutorial)
- Select the edition
Step 4: Save the file in your desired location
Step 5: Open the downloaded file, and you should be seeing a message something like verifying and opening. Once you get the below screen, drag and drop the IntelliJ to the Applications folder
Step 6: After you drag and drop into the applications folder, you should see something like below screen,
Step 7: Once the copying process has been done, follow the below steps,
- Click Applications folder in the side panel
- Double Click IntelliJ
- Click Open
Step 8: You should be able to see IntelliJ application has been opened
Step 9: Welcome to IntelliJ IDEA screen
Step 10: You can add IntelliJ to Mac’s Dock by right-clicking IntelliJ which is opened in the Dock -> Click Options -> Click Keep in Dock so that you can quickly access IntelliJ next time.
You have downloaded and installed IntelliJ successfully!!

Installing
Here's how to get Cursive installed.
Download IntelliJ
First, if you haven't already, download IntelliJ here. If you don'thave a licence for the Ultimate Edition, the free Community Edition is fine. IntelliJ is available for Windows,Mac OS X, and Linux. Cursive will work with IntelliJ versions from the last two years, currently 2017.3, 2018.x and2019.x.
Plugin Selection
If you're starting IntelliJ for the first time, it will ask you to select the plugins you'd like to use from the listof bundled plugins. It's a good idea to disable plugins you know you'll never use to improve startup time and memoryuse. If you change your mind later, you can always re-enable them in Settings→Plugins.
Coming from Eclipse?
If you're used to using Eclipse, JetBrains have amigration guide. It's fairly Javaspecific but there's some useful information there relevant to Cursive too, as well as basic IntelliJ terminology.
Removing conflicting plugins
If you already have La Clojure, clojure-kit or the existing Leiningen plugin from Jan Thomä installed, you'llneed to uninstall them or they'll conflict with Cursive. Open Settings→Plugins and select the'Installed' tab. Uninstall the plugins by clicking on the plugin title and selecting 'Uninstall' from the drop-down.Restart IntelliJ when it prompts you to.
Installing Cursive
If this is the first time you've started IntelliJ, you'll see the welcome screen:
To install the plugin, open the plugins dialog from the Configure menu:
If you've been using IntelliJ previously, then open the plugins window from Settings→Plugins asnormal.
Once in the Plugins window, select the 'Marketplace' tab and search for Cursive.
Install Cursive using the green install button, then close thePlugins window and the Settings window. Restart IntelliJ when it prompts you to.
Documentation Conventions
In this guide, we'll frequently describe actions you should perform like this: Help→Register Cursive....This means you should open the 'Help' menu, and within that select the 'Register Cursive...' menu item. Actions willfrequently have keyboard shortcuts you can use instead of mousing around the menus, those that do will have theshortcut shown on the right of the menu item.

We'll show shortcuts for actions like this: Ctrl+Q (View→Quick Documentation). If a particular action has multiple keybindings assignedto it, they'll be shown separated by a slash (/). You can choose the platform you'd like to see theshortcuts for using the dropdown at the bottom of the sidebar on the left. 'Emacs' means that you've selected theEmacs keymap on any platform.
IntelliJ Settings
IntelliJ is very configurable - you'll find the general settings in IntelliJ IDEA→Preferences on OSX, orFile→Settings on Windows or Linux. If you're looking for something specific, try typing it into the search boxabove the left hand panel and IntelliJ will highlight any instances of settings with that name. All Cursive settingsare searchable in this way.

To describe where to configure something in the IntelliJ settings, we'll describe them like this:Settings→Plugins. This means to open the settings and then to select the 'Plugins' configuration panel from thelist on the left. There are a lot of settings, so these may be nested, likeSettings→Languages & Frameworks→Clojure.
Cursive Licence

The first time you start IntelliJ with Cursive installed, you'll be prompted for a licence. If you havea licence already, you can enter it using the 'Activate it' link. You can get a licence from ourwebsite by using the 'Our website' link. If you want to try Cursive out, or are waiting for a licenceyou'll be able to evaluate Cursive for 30 days from the time you first open it. You can always enter alicence at a later date using Help→Register Cursive....
Once you've chosen your option and accepted the licence conditions, you'll be ready to get started!
Choosing to receive EAP (beta) builds
Cursive uses two separate channels for releases. Stable builds are released in the JetBrains plugin repositoryas normal, and IntelliJ will automatically prompt you to upgrade when new Cursive versions are available.However, in order to receive feedback about new features, generally we will release one or more Early AccessProgram (EAP, or beta) builds prior to releasing a stable one. If you'd like to try the latest and greatestfeatures, and you're willing to accept that they might not have had all the bugs worked out yet, you canopt in to receive these builds as well. When you first install Cursive you'll be prompted to choose whetheryou'd like to receive EAP builds, but if you change your mind later you can always change the setting atSettings→Languages & Frameworks→Clojure→Check for EAP builds. After enabling thisoption, you can then go to Settings→Plugins and search for 'Cursive' again as described above to seeif there are any EAP builds currently available.

Downgrading Cursive
If you find that the current version of Cursive has a bug which affects you badly (this can happen in theEAP channel, especially), you can always downgrade to a previous version that worked for you. Go to theCursive plugin repo page, and there you can downloadprevious versions. Make sure you download the plugin version which is compatible with the IntelliJ versionyou are using. If you'd like to downgrade to a previous EAP version you'll need to click the eap buttonto show the EAP releases. Once you've downloaded the version you want, install it usingSettings→Plugins, clicking on the gear icon and choosing 'Install from disk...'.
